Fairy Tales
We had a lot of fun when we presented the different types of fairy tales in form of short theatre plays while our project activity in Hungary. It was interesting to see that there are a lot of similarities and differences between the fairy tales of different countries. The Keen-Witted Orphan
Estonian folk tale by Juhan Kunder
Click on the orange button and read the adapted story retold by an American. Please notice that the bath house (as it is said in the story) is actually an Estonian sauna which has been and still is an important part of Estonian culture. The orphan didn't work there but just went to sauna and helped elderly people, because she was kind.

King Matthias and the Shepherd
(Hungarian folktale)
The Prussian King was jealous of the lamb with a golden fleece of King Matthias and decided to obtain it by any means. They make a bet on whether the shepherd looking over the lamb, who is famous for always telling the truth, lies or not. The Prussian King, with the slyness of his daughter, and of course with some sacrifice, obtains the skin of the lamb with the golden fleece. The shepherd is sad, he is suffering and sinks deeper and deeper into the maze of lies – until finally ...
Hedgehog's Home / Ježurka ježic
In a lush and lively forest lives a hedgehog. He is respected and envied by the other animals. However, Hedgehog’s unwavering devotion to his home annoys a quartet of insatiable beasts. Together, they march off towards Hedgehog’s home and spark a tense and prickly standoff.
Based on the classic story by Branko Ćopić. Hedgehog’s Home is a warm and universal tale for young and old that reminds us there truly is no place like home.

Theatre, Theatre - open the curtain
The German team presented a shortened version of "Snow-White and Rose-Red" with help of funny costumes, some piano music and making use of the other groups' stage decoration.
We chose this German fairy tale as it has a moral that still is "modern" today.
On the left you can see the stage decoration for the Birch and the Star.
There are many Finnish fairytales which are not so famous among children nowadays. We wanted to choose one from our national writer, Zacharias Topelius. He was one of the best-known writers in 19th century.
